How to charge electric bike

A key part of owning an electric bike is charging the battery. In this video we are going to show you how to do this correctly on all electric bikes but specifically on Yamaha and Bosch electric bikes. So, if you want to learn how to charge electric bike battery, you have come to the right place.

Where to charge an electric bike

Before you start charging your electric bike, make sure that you are using an appropriate charging environment:

  • Flat and stable
  • Free of rain or moisture
  • Out of direct sunlight 
  • Well ventilated and dry
  • Not accessible to children or pets
  • Temperature between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius.

Charging the battery on the bike:

  • Locate and lift the rubber cover on the bottom left hand side of the battery.

  • Plug the charger in with the white arrow facing the front and pointing towards the battery.

  • To remove the charger plug, slide the collar with the white arrow on, away from the battery and then pull the plug out.

  • While charging the plug is locked in place so don’t attempt to remove the charger by pulling the cable. 

Removing and replacing the battery for charging off the bike:

  • Insert the key into the lock at the top of the battery, support the battery with one hand and turn the key clockwise.

  • Pulling from the top, tip the battery and lift it out.
  • Remove the key.

  • To replace the battery, you don’t need the key. 
  • Place the bottom of the battery into the battery holder taking extra care to align the contacts.

  • Tip the battery and slot in place. You will hear a click.

To test the power level on the battery, press the front of the display and the bars will light up to indicate how much power is left.

How to charge electric bike– Bosch electric bike battery system

Charging the battery on the bike:

  • Locate and open the rubber cover on the bottom left hand side of the battery mount. 
  • Plug the charger in with the thumb indentation uppermost.
  • Green LED lights on the battery will start flashing. Each LED corresponds to 20% of the battery capacity. A flashing LED indicates charging of the next 20%. All LEDs will switch off when the battery is fully charged. 
  • Once the charging process is finished the battery will switch off automatically. 
  • Unplug the cable from the battery.
  • Push the rubber cover on the battery mount back into place.

Charging the battery off the bike:

  • Remove the battery and place it securely on a flat and stable surface.
  • The socket on the battery is located at the bottom of the battery. 
  • Plug the charger in with the thumb indentation uppermost. 
  • Once the charging process is finished unplug the cable from the battery.

  • Replace the battery back on the bike.

How to charge other electric bike systems

Charging the battery on other electric bike brands:

  • Remove the rubber cover from the charging port.

  • Plug in the charger.

  • The red led light will appear on the charger.  This indicates a charging process.  
  • Once the battery is charged, the light will change to green or automatically switch off. 
  • Unplug the charger. 
  • Push the rubber cover back into place. 
  • Make sure that the rubber cover is always closed. Without it the battery is not protected from water. 
  • To prolong the life of the battery, if not used, store it in a dry and warm place, about 20 degrees Celsius is recommended.

For safety reasons DO NOT LEAVE A BATTERY ON CHARGE ANYWHERE UNATTENDED OR OVERNIGHT.
